Video Slam Celebrates Indie Film. The DIVA Media Arts committee (MAC) is sponsoring a monthly series of Video Slams. The Video Slam is an opportunity to screen short works by artists in the spirit of the poetry slam. At the end of each session the audience chooses a winning video. The monthly winners are entered on behalf of the artist in the Third Annual OpenLens Festival competition, January 12-14, 2007.
A major focus of the Slam is building community and facilitating the exchange of ideas and skills between video makers. We are noticing an increasing number of University students participating and hope to draw more young artists to the Center. The MAC is interested in facilitating video and film production within the local community and beyond. Photo at left: includes MAC members and Slam hosts, Steve Poizat-Newcomb and Carl Diehl.

Volunteer of the Month. Henry Weintraub has been a volunteer Media Arts Committee member for the past two years.
During his tenure he has been instrumental in establishing a number of unique program offerings. The "Odd Sunday Film Seminar" ran for over a year and featured classic films from the past that were screed and discussed. He was also one of the original founders of the OpenLens Festival and is serving as its current Director. The Third Annual OpenLens Festival will take place in January 2007.
This Summer, Henry began a new film series called "Viewer's Choice", in which the audience chooses from five films the one they would like to see and discuss for the evening. He also co-hosts the Center's "Video Slam" event with two other media arts committee members. The slam offers indie video artist the opportunity to compete in the tradition of the popular poetry slam format.      These offerings bring new audiences to the Center and help make DIVA a popular venue downtown Eugene. DIVA Festival Mentioned in New Magazine. The Autumn, 2006 edition of the Eugene Magazine: Lane County's Lifestyle Quarterly, features, among other Eugene area filmmakers, DIVA's own Henry Weintraub, Director of the Center's Third Annual OpenLens Festival.
The article includes a brief introduction to the OpenLens Festival itself and how it has evolved over the past two years. Last year, the article notes, the audience almost tripled in attendance with the participation of director and screen writer Susan Emshwiller, as host and workshop instructor.
Next year's festival is scheduled for January 12-13-14, 2007 and will feature Portland filmmaker and sound designer Kelley Booth. Booth will screen his feature film, "Kicking Bird", on Friday January 12th and then teach two film workshops, Making the Extremely Low Budget Feature; and Guerilla Marketing and Distribution. In addition to his screening and teaching, Booth will host the awards ceremony on Sunday evening.
Film submissions for the 2007 festival are now being accepted. The deadline is October 27th. See the OpenLens web site for details.

Art and Hot Jobs for 2007. In an article by Candace Corner, a CareerBuilder.com writer, two of the 10 hot jobs for 2007 include art. The Art Therapist is a position requiring a master's degree in Art Therapy and about 1,000 hours of direct client contact before graduation. An Art therapist treats physical, mental and emotional disabilities through art expression. An other job is that of Medical Illustrator. These individuals create images that visually communicate bioscientific and medical discoveries. They also act as consultants, advisers, administrators and educators in biological science communications. Read More.

Do You Like Watching Films? The Eugene Film Festival will soon start accepting submissions and Thaddeus Konar is creating a team of film reviewers. Last year the EFF team reviewed over 300 movies, this year with a longer submission period the total may reach 450-500. Each movie ideally should be evaluated by about 10 reviewers. The evaluation itself is simple – you watch the movie (either by yourself or in the group setting) and assign a number between 1 and 10 (with 10 being perfect and 1 a total dog). The submissions will start by the end of October and will continue until July. Please contact Thaddeus Kona if you are interested.

The New Orleans Kid Camera Project. (Scout Report) What happens when a group of energetic young people offer cameras to a group of even younger people in New Orleans? As it turns out, quite a bit, and the proof is in the photographs on this site. The New Orleans Kid Camera Project was created in order to allow "children from flooded neighborhoods to explore their environment and express themselves, their stories and feelings with their friends." The goals of the project are quite ambitious, as its leaders are bringing together an interest in the power of community development and art therapy into the mix as they offer these young people the opportunity to document their community through a variety of endeavors. Through weekly meetings, young people and group leaders get the opportunity to learn a host of skills and also share their photographs.
As mentioned previously, interested parties can take a look at their group blogs to learn more about their progress, and also check out some of their photo galleries, which are organized by ward. The photographs are quite stark and honest, and include images of a small child looking happily towards the camera, accompanied by the caption "The girl who loves to pose". Persons who wish to stay abreast of future developments on the site can sign up to join their mailing list. Visit Web Site.

Lawrence Denny Lindsley Photographs. Lawrence Denny Lindsley was born in 1878 in a house on scenic Lake Union, right in the middle of the relatively young city of Seattle, Washington. As a descendant of the early Seattle pioneer David Denny, Lindsley began to wander around the city and its environs from a young age. Like many men in the Pacific Northwest during the late 19th century, he enjoyed the outdoors, and soon developed a skill for photography. He later went on to work for Edward Curtis, and he continued on by documenting such landscapes as Mount Rainer, Lake Chelan, and the Olympic Peninsula. Many of these excellent photographs can be viewed in this latest offering from the University of Washington Libraries Digital Collection. All told, there are 472 photographs here, complete with detailed records. The King County section is a real highlight, as visitors will get a real sense of the area before it became heavily urbanized during the 20th century. Visit Web Site.
