Fall is upon us and the DIVA Center welcomes a new season of exhibits, screenings, classes. and workshops. Check out the calendar below for specific events this month or see the complete fall calendar or class-workshop schedule on the DIVA web site.

New DIVA Volunteer Training Meeting. Are you interested in volunteering at DIVA - gallery hosting, helping with exhibits, manning events, assisting with administrative duties and other projects? Come to October's volunteer meeting to learn about DIVA and find out about volunteer opportunities. Meeting: October 11th at 5:30pm. Meet at DIVA.

UKEtoberfest. DIVA is one sponsor for the first Eugene Uketoberfest, on Saturday, October 27 from 9 am until 10pm. This is an entire day devoted to that cutest of instruments, the ukulele. The Eugene UKEtoberfest will feature ukulele concerts, and open mic, hula dancing, jam sessions, workshops and vendors, a swap meet and prizes. The event will be held at a variety of venues in downtown Eugene including the DIVA. We hope you can come and join the fun.

Jerry Ross Leaves DIVA Board. Jerry Ross, one of DIVA’s founding members has recently retired from its Board of Directors. Jerry’s commitment to DIVA since its inception has kept DIVA moving forward toward the goal of a downtown Arts and Culture academy. DIVA thanks Jerry for his commitment and vision.

Meet DIVA’s Newest Board Members:

  • Caroline Passerotti is a Financial Analysis Manager for Lane 4J School District and a long-time volunteer and supporter of DIVA.
  • Eric Stillwell is the Government Relations Assistant for the University of Oregon. Eric brings a strong background in Media Arts to the DIVA board and is highly involved in the Eugene Community.
  • Rick Williams is the Director of the Art Department at Lane Community College. Rick brings a rich background in the arts, a commitment to strengthening arts education in schools and a healthy liaison with Lane Community College.
  • Rogena Degge is a retired professor from the University of Oregon’s in Arts Administration and Arts Education. Rogena is an artist and longtime supporter of Visual Arts in Eugene.

Second Saturday. October’s Second Saturday Art Sale falls on October 13. DIVA member artist’s interested in selling prints or seconds, contact or call Mary Unruh at .

DIVA’S at DAVIS’. DIVA welcomes our new neighbor, DAVIS’ Restaurant and Bar. Join us for a First Friday Art Walk after-party on October 5 at their restaurant at 94 W. Broadway – across the street from DIVA. They will be featuring the music of Mood Area 52 and showing the paintings of Isaac Marquez. Keep the fun going!

Fall Class and Workshops. Current workshops and classes are fully described online at the DIVA Workshop and Class web site.

Volunteers Needed. DIVA needs volunteers interested in managing volunteers, website development, public relations, facilities upkeep and office support. If you have time and interest in any of these activities, contact Mary Unruh at or .

James Denier Volunteer of the Month - October, 2007. James Denier has been an active volunteer with the Center's Media Arts program. His generous willingness to help with events as an on site manager for many of the Center's screenings and festival activities has substantially contributed to helping build a solid media arts program at DIVA. His contributions over the past couple of years has been greatly appreciated.

OpenLens Festival Call for Entries. DIVA is calling for submission by artists for its fourth annual mid-Oregon video and film festival. This festival provides an opportunity for local film makers to showcase their work in a competitive event. Prizes include Best Juried Award and Audience Choice Award. The festival will be held January 11-12-13, 2008. The Center is now accepting submissions of short film/video works of 10 minutes or less by media artists in SW Oregon counties of Benton, Coos, Curry, Deschutes, Douglas, Lane, Linn, Jackson, Josephine, and Klamath. Early deadline: October 26. Late deadline: November 21(no work accepted after this date.) Visit the OpenLens web site for more information.

Call for 2008 Exhibit Proposals. DIVA invites artists, curators, groups, and organizations to submit exhibit proposals for our six-gallery facility July through December 2008. We welcome a wide variety of proposals including installation, multi-media, time-based, performance, or other creative uses of our gallery spaces. Individuals and groups living in Oregon or proposals that are significant to Oregon are eligible to apply. If you submit samples of the work, they must be in digital format. Images are not required, but are helpful if you have some visual representation of your concept. Applications will be received at DIVA through 6:00pm on November 16, 2007. Notification letters will be mailed by January 8, 2008. Download the Exhibit Proposal Guidelines 2008.

October Exhibits at DIVA Center. The Downtown Initiative for the Visual Arts (DIVA) presents five new exhibits in our six-gallery facility: "Pastels" by Tenold Peterson; "Ancestral Voices/Inherited Visions" by Analee Fuentes and Lillian Pitt; "The Elder Series" by Kathy Tiger; Maude Kerns Downtown Gallery: "Figuratively Speaking". Members' Gallery: Patsy Hand - "Impressions of Color".

All exhibits run through October 27th, 2007. DIVA Center - 110 W. Broadway, Eugene, Oregon.

Call for Art - Members' Miniatures. DIVA members are invited to submit works for our first ever holiday miniatures exhibition. As this exhibit will take place in our smallest gallery, it will be a juried exhibition. If additional space is necessary, we may also display pieces in the lobby area. For more information please see the attached Call for Art and Entry Form. Artwork/Application Drop Off: October 23-26 12-5pm. Exhibition Dates: November 2 - December 22nd.

Contemporary NW artists featured at JSMA. The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (JSMA) will display works of six contemporary artists from Oregon and Washington in "NewArt Northwest," on display from Oct. 6 to Dec. 30. On display are the works of Seattle artists Richard Hutter (collage, acrylic on canvas), Betsy Eby (dry graphite and encaustic) and Mark Zirpel (glass, kinetic sculpture); Portland artist Eugenia Pardue (acrylic); and Eugene artists Anya Kivarkis (metal) and David Willis (glass). Museum hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesdays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays

October 07 - The Liveliest Art: The Work of Director Akira Kurosawa
Admission: Free

Three outstanding films by director Akira Kurosawa will be screened with each followed by an engaging audience discussion lead by former Hollywood director Thomas Blank.

  • 1:00 PM Yojimbo
    Samurai Sanjuro is able to turn a war between two evil clans to his benefit, and rids a terror-stricken village of corruption.
  • 4:00 PM Kagemusha
    A criminal who is taught to impersonate a dying warlord dissuades opposing lords from attacking a newly vulnerable clan.
  • 7:00 PM The Hidden Fortress
    The royal treasure is smuggled out of hostile territory by general and a princess with two bumbling, conniving peasants at their sides.

October 12 - The Short Narrative Film - with filmmaker panel discussion
Time: 7:00 PM

This evening's presentation is a celebration of the narrative film as a storytelling medium. Guest filmmakers will participate in a post-screening panel discussion with the audience.

October 14 - Filmmaker's Forum: Working Within A Limited Set
Time: 7:00 PM
Admission: Free

Getting everyone on location can be a daunting task. Make that multiple locations and the task can be insurmountable. Guests this evening include Kaethlyn Elliott and Thaddeus Konar, participants in "Hotel Shorts", short films that all use the same single hotel room for their sets.

The Filmmaker's Forum is a networking group for local filmmakers dedicated to informal peer support and collaboration. Meetings include presentations, discussions, screenings, educational opportunities, and periodic collaborative challenges. Bring your ideas and works in progress to share. Let's rap it out. Hosts: Anna Hults and James Denier.

October 21 - Monthly Artist Salon - Artists and the Web Part 1
Time: 4:00 PM
Cost: Free
Part 1 of this 3-part series looks at paying a professional web designer to design your artist web site. We plan on having at least one web designer present the pros and cons of hiring a professional, what issues you should be aware of, cost, and other questions you might have. Bring something tasty to share and remember we will select
the Members' Gallery exhibit for March. Current DIVA members may bring one or two examples of their artwork for consideration for this exhibit.

October 21 - Bonnie and Clyde (1967)
Time: 7:00 PM
Admission: Free
Sponsor: Art House Films and Conversation Series

The groundbreaking and controversial film by Arthur Penn about two famous and ruthless American outlaws.  The film won two academy awards despite its original scathing reviews. The screening is followed by a thought-provoking audience discussion lead by program host, Steve Poizat-Newcomb

October 28 - Video Slam
Time: 4:00 PM
Admission: Free
Arrive by 3:30 to enter your video in the competition

Held in the tradition of the poetry slam this fourth event showcases the work of local film and video artists. The audience selects the evening's best video with that winner going on to the December Video Slam Festival.

The Downtown Initiative for the Visual Arts is a catalyst for revitalizing Downtown Eugene Oregon around the visual arts. 
    The mission of DIVA is to provide a multi-use visual art facility in downtown Eugene that will serve artists and the community through the collaborative efforts of existing visual arts entities.     DIVA's goal is to promote the talent of artists and public appreciation of the arts, and to develop the downtown as a nexus for visual arts activities, including exhibitions, education and the housing of a permanent city of Eugene art collection.
