Spring into Action - Commentary by Mary Unruh. Our Spring Giving Campaign is off to a good start. Our thanks to Paper Plus, Clancey Printing and Willamette.net for their in-kind support of our effort. We’ve already started receiving returns and we are very gratified that many of our friends don’t miss a beat when it comes to showing their appreciation for what DIVA is accomplishing for downtown and for visual arts by sending their checks to keep us going.
Donations and memberships provide by far the major funding for DIVA’s operations and programming. Our campaigns are a reminder to everyone who enjoys our films, exhibits and classes that we do need funds to maintain the quality and variety they enjoy. We love what we do, but the bills have to be paid. Those boring things like rent, utilities, payroll, and insurance are necessary for us to keep doing all the fun things you enjoy.
When you receive our mailing, please think about how much you enjoy what we provide and how DIVA is changing the dynamics of downtown Eugene. A thousand friends willing to give $100 a year would meet all of our boring expenses and allow us to do even more exciting visual art activity in the heart of Eugene. It isn’t just about us, its about you. Think about what YOU enjoy about DIVA when you write your check and Spring into action to help us do even more. Mary Unruh is the Executive Director of the DIVA Center.

Volunteer Of The Month. Steve is a long-time member of DIVA's Media Arts Committee. He currently serves as the committee's Secretary and chairs DIVA's annual OpenLens Festival program group. Steve also hosts the popular Art House Films and Conversation series on the third Sunday of each month. He has also taught film and video workshops for youth at DIVA. Steve is know for his generous willingness to help with events and to work towards building a solid media arts program at DIVA.
He says, "DIVA is a great venue for both local art and national and international documented work that gets little mainstream attention. Working for an organization that is democratic, inclusive, and reflective of community interests makes for a satisfying sense of involvement and contribution. DIVA offers extraordinary learning opportunities through its classes and visiting speakers, artists, and experts in their field. I have learned a great deal and met many good and intriguing people through my involvement with DIVA and the Media Arts Committee. I look forward to participation in future DIVA events and exhibits.".

But things go from bad to worse as they get carjacked by a man professing to be God and are later abducted by a band of anarchists. Edward Hopper: The Artist. (Scout Report) The exhibition web site for Edward Hopper, from the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, features a slide show of a dozen of Hopper's paintings, and a digital version of one of the artist's sketchbooks. Some Hopper paintings, for instance Nighthawks, 1942, have been reproduced so many times and in so many formats - posters, prints, t-shirts, coffee mugs - that they have become iconic and these are included in the slide show. The sketchbook offers a more uncommon glimpse of Hopper's work: the pencil studies that led to his paintings, meticulously annotated by his wife, Josephine Nivison Hopper, his only female model. Another plus of the sketchbook is the ability to turn the pages online, and zoom in on detail. Visit Museum Site.
