DIVA CENTER NEWS AND EVENTS

Volume 2. Number 05. May, 2007

Circle The Easels - Commentary by Randy Stender

Opportunity and crisis are the same character in the Chinese alphabet.  I've often wondered if that character resembles DIVA's logo.
    Blocks of boarded up buildings provided us the opportunity to create DIVA three and a half years ago. Today our galleries lie in the middle of the area targeted by the City of Eugene for redevelopment. Decisions made by those outside the arts world will affect our future. We could end up with a black box theater and brand new gallery space subsidized by the City or we could disappear.
    The Mayor's Cultural Policy Review committee is currently accessing cultural priorities.  In the middle of this process Lane Arts Council has all but shut its doors. Recommendations made by outside consultants will affect our future. We could end up with a line item in the city budget to advance the visual arts in our city or revert back to petty turf wars of small groups each fighting for day to day existence.
    The 2008 Olympic Trials will be held in our city next summer attracting hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars.  Recent management shakeups at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum occurred because of the inability to raise money for basic operations. Opinions of many visitors will be cast during their visit to the trials.

We could be viewed as a Great city of the Arts and Outdoors or just a nice place to visit.
   If the visual arts are to continue down the path of opportunity it is contingent on us, you and me, to take action.  Four simple steps will greatly enhance our chances:
  1. Jacobs Gallery, Gallery at the Airport, DIVA, Maude Kerns and Lane Arts Council executive committees need to meet, set priorities and speak as a unified front.  If we don't others will choose our course.
  2. The art appreciating public needs to volunteer time and financial support.  If arts are a priority for you now is the time to take action.
  3. Artists must convey to their government representatives and patrons the importance of our not-for-profit venues.
  4. All of us need to bring friends and family to the next Indy film or First Friday Artwalk.

We are at a crossroad.  Lets choose the right path.

~~~ Randy Stender is the DIVA Board Chair. Stender is an arts advocate and collector and has spent many volunteer hours directing DIVA through the growing pains of establishing itself as a unique force in Eugene's visual arts community.
Second Saturday Studio Art Sale. DIVA will host a special sale of art work at the Center each second saturday of the month. The first sale is on May 12th - just in time to celebrate Mother's Day. Here's how it works. Participating DIVA member artists provide an inventory list of items for sale (download form). Prices must be clearly marked on items for sale. Participating artists agree to volunteer one Saturday per year to assist on site with the sale. A $10 fee per event is required upon registration to cover facility upkeep and promotion of Second Saturday. DIVA will promote the sale with posters, flyers, emails and calendar listings. DIVA will process sales (including credit card) and pay the artists. DIVA's regular 35% commission applies.
The Center welcomes a wide variety of art: glass, textiles, basketry, original jewelry, paintings, sculpture, ceramics, photo- graphy, video/film, and other media. Original art for re-sale by DIVA member collectors will be considered. If you have work you want to sell submit an application by May 1st for inclusion in the May 12th sale. Pick-up an application at DIVA (110 W. Broadway) or download here. For more information, call us at or email .
DIVA Calls For Exhibit Proposals. DIVA invites artists, curators, groups, and organizations to submit exhibit proposals for our six-gallery facility January through June 2008. We welcome a wide variety of proposals including installation, multi-media, time-based, performance, or other creative uses of our gallery spaces. Individuals and groups living in Oregon or proposals that are significant to Oregon are eligible to apply. If you submit samples of the work, they must be in digital format. Images are not required, but are helpful if you have some visual representation of your concept. Applications will be received at DIVA through 6:00pm on June 15, 2007. Notification letters will be mailed by July 31, 2007. Another opportunity to submit
exhibit proposals will come in November for July through December 2008. Download Application (PDF) .
DIVA Summer Hours. Beginning in May DIVA's Summer hours will be 12 noon to 6 PM Tuesday through Saturday. Home downtown and visit the Center on a warm summer evening after work.
Welcome Stephanie Kelley. The DIVA Board recently welcomed Stephanie Kelley as a new member.
   Stephanie is a Financial Consultant with the Saunders-Kelly Financial Group at A.G. Edwards & Sons, Inc. In addition to her participation on the DIVA Board, she is the Board President Elect for Birth To Three; consultant for Committed Partners for Youth; Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, TADA Host Committee Member; and Ruby Tuesday, Consultant.
   Stephanie notes, "I feel passionately that healthy communities have access to, embrace and support the arts in every possible form.  The Downtown Initiative for the Visual Arts has the potential to bring vibrancy and health to the core of Eugene. I am bound and determined to do what I can to bring that potential to fruition."
   Stephanie and former Board Member Jason Saunders recently sponsored a successful VIP reception at the Center that recognized and encouraged area businesses in their support DIVA.
Call For Summer Class and Workshop Proposals. Summer term is just around the corner and the DIVA Center is seeking proposals for day and evening classes and workshops in all media--drawing, painting, film, etc.
    If you would like to re-submit a proposal from previous terms, let me know before filling out the form again, I should have it on file.
    The Center would like to offer more workshops (those that meet just once or twice) as a way to add variety to the schedule. So, please consider offering a single workshop in your medium, possibly as an introduction to a longer class.
    The Spring term classes will start the week of June 26th, although all classes and workshops don't have to start that week. You can download a proposal form, or there are also forms printed out at DIVA. If you have any trouble editing the attachment you can also just copy and paste the information in an email. If you've taught at DIVA before you can ignore the "qualifications" question. Please reply asap, Friday May 11th is the deadline for the Spring schedule.
Volunteer Of The Month. Michael Northup has recently started volunteering at DIVA, and has been extremely valuable in helping us with our computer system. Additionally, he has helped as a gallery host while working on our network and setting up computer work stations in our classroom. He says, "I enjoy doing art and experiencing art, and I value the role of art in society. I'm glad to be able to facilitate the process." Call for DIVA Volunteers. The Center is seeking two skilled volunteers.
    The first is someone who would be able to serve as the Center's e-calendar point person keeping the web calendar up-to-date.
    The second is a individual that is handy with tools to help keep the Center's facilities in good repair doing minor carpentery work, changing light bulbs, and making sure the facility is in operational condition. If you are interested, please contact Mary Unruh at
First Friday ArtWalk. Join fellow patrons of the arts on this monthly tour of downtown gallery events. The DIVA Center will be presenting a whole array of new exhibits for May-June (see below). Visit the Lane Arts Council web site for details.
Carolezoom Battles Portland Gallery Access. DIVA Board Member, Carolezoom, who now lives in Portland, is finding the word "access" is something the PDX gallery scene has not heard. An article in Willamette Week Online interviews Carole who finds herself denied access to at least 30 percent of the Portland galleries because of architectural barriers. Just as she did in Eugene, she has launched an educational effort to get gallery owners and event sites in her new city to make access a priority. Her efforts are bringing change to the City of the Roses. Read more in Kyle Cassidy's article, The art of a good vent: Disabled activist on a roll against PDX's art community.
DIVA Member To Exhibit In Portland. Media Arts Committee Chairperson, Daniel Heila, has an installation on exhibit at the Portland Art Center May 2-26th. The installation was born from a mix of influences; the seasons, seashore environments, moon cycles, cycles of my mental states, cycle of the day, suburban existence, monotony of daily tasks, isolation.
     In the cycle of the large screen projection, the material for the video was gathered during the workweek during my time "on shift" being a chauffeur for my children, running errands, etc.), and during my time "off shift" (sleeping). The small screen images document places of habitude in and around the home that are forgotten in the hustle-bustle of everyday life (much like tide pools during high tide) that seem more exposed and strangely expectant without any human presence.  The audio is derived from the sync sound of the video taping process. Its processing is largely a result of manipulations of the associated video clips. In the case of the small screen projections (4 of six) the audio is also derived from sync sound and presented as an intimate ensemble of waveform translators.
Gallery Committee Decisions. The process for establishing new gallery exhibits will change for 2008. At least four theme based shows will be curated by adhoc groups within the Exhibits Committee. These themes, approved by the Board, will draw together a variety of visual and cinematic arts around a particular concept or theme. These two month shows will be supplemented by exhibits curated by the Exhibits coordinator.
DIVA Video Slam Winners. We have a winner! We actually have to winners. In March the video slam winner was Jesse England for his experimental "Ultra Wash III".
DIVA's Wish List. DIVA always welcome materials and resources to help develop our facility as a unique service for the community. On our wish list includes the following items:
• Padded gallery bench for rest and reflection when viewing exhibits.
• Medium size microwave oven for kitchenette area
• 16mm movie projector - in excellent running condition
• Both a small and large paper cutter with sharp, even cutting blade
• Roller blade paper cutter - for trimming photographs and fine papers
• A wall clock - for the DIVA lobby
• Small step stool - to reach the high cupboards
• Large beam flashlight
• Basic art supplies for sign making
DIVA Center's Time Based Arts. DIVA has become a regional center for time-based arts including film, video, sound, digital media, performance and installation. Hundreds of new visitors come to the Center each year for media events.
    The DIVA Media Arts Committee, called the MAC by members, began as the Second Friday Film Forum nearly three years ago. That committee, which originally screened independent films once a month, quickly grew into the current 11-member group that is dedicated to presenting a diversity of events at the Center including: independent films by emerging artists, experimental video and music performances, workshops by visiting media artists, and annual events like the Improvised Music and Moving Image Festival in December and the Third Annual OpenLens Film Festival in January.
    The Media Arts Committee has staged close to 200 events since it began bringing to the center some of the top people in their fields including: Screenwriter/Director Susan Emshwiller; Producer/Director Neal Miller; Canadian filmmaker Alex MacKenzie, Portland Artist Matt McCormick, media consultant Morrie Warshawski, and Carl Stone and Emil Beaulieau, world renown electro-acoustic composers and musician.
    Time-based media have proven crucial to the success of DIVA as a cultural resource in the heart of Eugene. For information about the media art events access the Media Arts Calendar or write .
From live video improvisations to calculated re-animation, from dada-mined archives to worm hole theories of collage Rhythm from Wreckage is a celebration of anomalous audio-visual pursuits.
Plumb the unseen worlds of everyday appliances with Jesse England (Springfield), Learn strange facts and machine mythologies from Nate Harrison (Los Angeles), and marvel at the synesthetic cinema found lurking in an SK-1 from Gijs Gieskes (Netherlands). MAY 20 - Film: Valerie and her Week of Wonders (1970) by Jaromil Jires
Time: 7:00 PM
Admission: FREE (Donations Accepted) Not for children Fantasy-Horror
Sponsor: Art House Films and Conversation Series
~~ Told in a most non-linear of fashions, the gist of the film has to do with a young woman given a pair of earrings that seem to retain some sort of magical power. The earrings allow Valerie to see the world around her as it really is. Full of greed, corruption and enough sexual deviance to make any early 70's filmgoer's head spin.
   Inspired by fairy-tales such as Alice in Wonderland and Little Red-Riding Hood, Jaromil Jires' film is a surreal tale in which love, fear, sex and religion merge into one fantastic world. The film is a success at combining the elements of a grotesque fairy tale, horror flick and sensual romp.
    DIVA's third Sunday Art House Films and Conversation features selections from domestic and foreign film classics rarely seen on the theater screen today. Thought-provoking audience discussions are lead by program coordinator, Steve Poizat-Newcomb, focusing on the significance of an evening's selected film.
May 27 Video Slam
Time: 4:00 PM
Admission: FREE (Donations Accepted)
Sponsor: DIVA Video Slam Committee
~~ Video artists screen their short works in a competition that follows in the tradition of the poetry slam. For many local artists the monthly Video Slam at DIVA has given them the opportunity of using the event as a self-imposed deadline for producing short works on a routine bases.
   Those who have entered the slam find it a creative challenge and an opportunity to hone their skills and knowledge. Screenings and critiques provide needed feedback.
   At the end of each session the audience chooses a winning video (finished or in development). The monthly winners will be presented at an annual Best Of The DIVA Video Slam Festival in December. The goal is to develop a local video and film community where work can be screened and discussed by peers. See the Video Slam web site for entry details.
6 Billion Others. (Scout Report) Yann Arthus-Bertrand is well-known for his multimedia projects which have taken photographic journeys across the globe, and this latest project continues in that visually rich tradition. His latest project, which is documented on this lovely site, looks at the lives of people from all around the world. Visitors to this site should start by listening to Arthus-Bertrand speak about his inspiration for this project, which came to him while speaking with a villager in Mali. After that, visitors can listen to some of the interviews which have been recorded so far, including conversations with Silvia in Brazil and Gianmaria in Italy. Additionally, the site contains a podcast that is available to download. Such an ambitious project might be the envy of many a journalist or social scientist, and it is a site that warrants several visits. Visit Site.
Free Online Media Courses. (Scout Report) The BBC has provided various distance-learning opportunities for listeners for decades, and this set of online materials reaches across the globe to provide anyone with an Internet connection a set of multimedia training exercises and tutorials. These particular guides and modules were originally designed for in-house use with BBC staff, and few editorial changes have been made in the interim. Visitors can browse through such sections as “Television”, “Radio”, “Broadcast Technology”, and “Journalism”. While some of the materials can bit a bit technical, there are many that provide basic operating procedures on creating effective radio interviews and editing existing video segments. Overall, it’s a fine site, and students and educators will benefit from the sage advice contained within these various teaching documents. Visit the BBC Training Site.
