Photo of Carl DiehlDIVA Member Receives Grant. University of Oregon MFA graduate Teaching Assistant and DIVA Media Arts Committee member Carl Diehl has been selected to receive a prestigious Dean's Fellowship Award for his proposed thesis . This $5,000 grant will be used to complete the production of his MFA final project in the School of Architecture and Allied Arts (AAA) Digital Arts program.
Proposals were submitted by 45 AAA masters students who were in the completion stage of their thesis project. Diehl received one of five awards.
Diehl's thesis project, "Paranormal Mechanisms," is an attempt to more thoroughly understand the impact of accidents, errors, and glitches on the technocultural imagination.  Particularly, he is interested in exploring vernacular belief structures and communities that seek out signals in noise, defying dominant ideologies of science and technology.
He is using"cryptozoology," the study of unknown animals (like Bigfoot), as a metaphorical framework for exploring vernacular electronic art forms that creatively modify obsolete technologies to counter high-tech systems.  Both cryptozoology and these vernacular electronic practices constitute challenges to exclusive knowledge structures by presenting alternative theories and new modes of understanding.
Right now, this project exists online as two web journals exploring the correlations between zoological and technological pursuits into the unknown.  These endeavors might be best described as speculative non-fiction.  This will coalesce into an intermedia installation, opening at UO Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art on May 18 (as part of the MFA Group Exhibition) Read Diehl's short essays, interviews and theories online and view his ongoing series of videos related to his ideas.
Carl is the co-cordinator of DIVA's Video Slam program that meets on the fourth Sunday each month.

Christine Sundt
Artist's Salon. Join DIVA Members and the public for the Artist's Salon at 7pm on Sunday, April 22nd, when guest speaker Christine Sundt will address the topic of "Copyright issues for Artists". Sundt is a University of Oregon Emerita Professor who was Curator of the Visual Resources Collection in the School of Architecture and Allied Arts Library. Her research interest are related to the importance of public domain works to art history teaching and research. Read Christine's online overview of copyright information related to "Orphan Works" (those materials for which clear rights are not easy to identify). Bring something tasty to share and current DIVA Members may bring one or two examples of their artwork for consideration for an exhibit in the September Members' Gallery.

Loren Sears at DIVA Center. Lauren Sears, experimental filmmaker, video artist, and educator, will screen and discuss his "Haight Ashbury Quartet" film program on August 13th at 7:00pm. The films in this series recount personal but widely shared experiences of the late '60s - from street and communal life of Haight-Ashbury to romance and family in the deep country of Northern California. Each is a documentary and a song of the times, people and places they record - so called, tribal home movies - ancient and eternal. Admission: $5. Members/students: $3. Sponsor: Second Friday Film Forum Program.

DIVA's monthly Video Slam event continues at 4 PM on Sunday, April 22nd. Video artists are encouraged to bring their short videos (10-minute max.) for screening in a competition that follows in the tradition of the poetry slam. A goal of this "show and share" event is to help develop a regional video and film community where work can be screened and discussed by peers. The audience votes to send one of the afternoon's videos to a year's end "Best Of" slam competition. Admission: Donation Requested. Information online. Phone: .

Photo of Scott Huette
Scott Huette DIVA Volunteer of the Month. Scott has been on the Artist Services Committee for a year and recently became the chair. His leadership is helping Artist Services strengthen their vision and improve their programming.
He says, "I place a great deal of personal value on the cultivation of culture and the visual arts. Volunteering is a vital part of being an artist. I get to serve the community by working to create connections and supporting others with similar values. Culture is created by the collective drive of individuals with similar spirits. I am delighted to be a part of that. It also serves me as I strive to be a working artist. I thrive on human interaction. DIVA draws many great and diverse people. I would find my life and my work lacking without this network."

International Films Festured at DIVA. The Best of the Eugene Film Festival Series continues at DIVA on April 8th at 7PM. The evening's theme is "Putting the 'International' in Eugene International Film Festival". A selection of short films submitted from around the world to the 2006 Eugene Film Festival will be screened. Titles include: "Binta and The Great Idea" (Academy Award Winner) by  Javier Fesser, Spain; "Missing Pages" Jerome Olivier, Japan; "Anna und der Soldat" by Christian Prettin, Germany; "Valour" by John Vaughan, Ireland and "Knight Lost" by Thomas Tate, Australia. Photo hands drawingEducational Opportunities. DIVA's Arts education program begins in April with a variety of workshops ranging from Manga character drawing for teens to painting in the tradition of the expressionist. The Center's schedule (online and below) reflects the need for educational experiences that fit into the busy schedule of those who are unable to devote time for longer traditional classes.
DIVA, in addition to workshops and classes, offers other opportunities to learn about the visual and cinematic arts.     Each month the Artist Salon features an informative guest speaker. Presenter topics have ranged from technical talks on preparing work for gallery exhibit to issues about the use of copyrighted materials in art projects.
First Friday ArtWALKS at DIVA provide the opportunity for the public to meet and engage one on one with the Center's exhibiting artists.
Sundays at DIVA are devoted to the cinematic arts. Four different programs have been designed to provide audiences with the opportunity to learn more about the moving image as a unique form of expression and communication.
On the first Sunday of each month former Hollywood director Thomas Blank explores the performing arts through a film series created in collaboration with the Hult Center's residential companies. Blank, along with a guest from a co-sponsoring arts group, conducts a post-screening conversation with the audience about the film they have seen and the art form it represented. In April, DIVA and the Eugene Symphony will host a free screening of Tony Palmer's documentary "Hail Bop! A Portrait of John Adams". Adams is one of America's most performed composers today.
The "Art House Film and Conversation" series explores rarely seen features, documentaries, and other films followed by engaging conversation led by DIVA's Steve Newcomb. This is yet another opportunity to enjoy an engaging discussion about the art of the cinema on the third Sunday of the month.
Two other Sunday programs provide a different kind of educational opportunity.
The second Sunday of the month includes"The Best of the Eugene Film Festival". Screenings include selections from the 300 plus features, animations, documentaries, and experimental films submitted to the festival for last Spring's international film festival. These films are rarely seen anywhere and Eugene is fortunate to have a collection for screening.
DIVA also offers a video slam that in the tradition of the poetry slam, provides an opportunity to show and share with local audiences new work by emerging video artists. The slam is a fourth Sunday event.
The Second Friday of each month provides a unique opportunity to visit with a cinematic artist. Film, video, and multimedia producers are invited to screen and discuss their recent work. Some artists stay overnight and conduct a workshop on Saturday morning. Artists from throughout the nation have visited DIVA through this unique artist-audience program.
The DIVA Center provides a diversity of learning opportunities about the visual and cinematic arts. From First Friday Art Walk visits with exhibiting artists, classes and workshops, to special speakers and film screening programs, DIVA has become a Center for learning in the heart of downtown Eugene. For more information about educational opportunities contact Eric Ostlind, DIVA Program Manager, at (gf)

Graphic map of day and night on the earth
Here comes the sun! The equinox has arrived and the Spring landscape is blooming in an array of colors. An equinox in astronomy is the event when the Sun can be observed to be directly above the Earth's equator (see left), occurring around March 20. It is one of two days each year when the center of the Sun spends an equal amount of time above and below the horizon at every location on Earth. So, now's the time to dig out your easels, paints, cameras, and other tools to work out doors on various art projects. Winter is no more!

DIVA CENTER GALLERY EXHIBITS

Dreamworks: Donna Fountain, Kathy Haydon, Hilary Russell and Pat Arrera. This is a four woman exhibit inspired by their dreams, meditations, reading and inner/spiritual musings. Drawn together by friendship and a passion for their studio work they occasionally exhibit as a group. Though each speaks with a different voice there is a harmony in their collective effort.

Sticks and Stones: The 'Twining Rivers Basket Society' exhibit includes work by Mariana Mace, Donna Sakamoto Crispin, Lei McCornack, Patricia Montoya Donohue and Sheila Tasker. The hand making of baskets provides these artists with the opportunity to express their creative visions through the use of natural materials. Whatever form, practical or pure fantasy, a basket contains abundance.

East of Eden: Rich Bergeman. More than 15 prints in the show depict abandoned ranches and homesteads, ghost towns, Native American petroglyphs, and landscapes from Oregon's "other half." Bergeman uses 5x7 and 8x10 large-format view cameras as well as digital cameras, and prints in the platinum process, a rediscovered printing medium that was more popular 100 years ago than it is today.

Sketches of Women: Howard Hauskneat. Sketching is a joyous dance of ink and paper, line and space, repetition and improvisation. Just a few strokes can express so much. The drawings in this collection were accomplished with models and were produced in the moment; no reworking of the drawings ensued.

Equus - New Works: By Sisy Anderson. This is Sisy Anderson's series of watercolor and inks wich celebrates the spirt of the horse. Each image is produced in the Chinese Brush Painting style, using bold strokes of ink and washes of watercolor on rice paper.

Poster of magazine cover
Turn of the Century Posters Exhibit. (Scout Report)This digital exhibit begins with an illustration of a group of urbanites all in a state of advanced concentration as they consider the latest issue of Harper’s magazine. Created sometime in the 1890s, this particular poster by Edward Penfield was one of the first art posters published in America.
This online collection from the New York Public Library is full of such images, and visitors will enjoy looking over the hundreds of art posters from the turn of the century offered here. Visitors can view posters created by dozens of artists, and they can also search the entire collection, if they so desire. There are a number of gems here, including the poster advertising the novel “The Involuntary Chaperon” by H.R. Boehm and Edmund Henry Garrett’s poster for "Romance and Reality of the Puritan Coast". Visit Digital Gallery.

Title London in MapsLondon: A Life in Maps. (Scout Report) Sometime in the middle of the thirteen century, the monk Matthew Paris created a diagram using ink and various pigments to illustrate his route from London to Apulia. In doing so, he created a document which forms part of the cartographic history of a city that would grow exponentially over the coming centuries. This document, along with thirty nine others, form part of the online exhibit, London: A Life in Maps. Created by staff members at the British Library, visitors can click on an interactive map (rather appropriately) to locate these various maps which go all the way up to the 21st century. Another fun feature on the site allows users to download a Google Earth layer that includes a selection of these maps, including one of Regents Park in 1841 and a plan of the London Docks from 1797. The site is rounded out by an area where visitors can send electronic cards to friends and colleagues that incorporate images from these maps. Visit Online Exhibit.

Photo scenes from four documentary filmsChannel4.com: Four Docs. (Scout Report) User-generated content remains a rather popular topic of discussion by Internet commentators and just about everyone who comes in contact with the web these days. Some have suggested that it would be nice to have some type of structure to some of this content, and fortunately this lovely site created by Channel 4 in London fits the bill quite well. As its title suggests, the Four Docs website is designed to give users the opportunity to submit their own four minute documentary, provided that it conforms to certain technical and legal requirements. The “About” area is a good place to get some more background on the whole affair, and then visitors should dive right in by watching a few of the films. A good way to do this is by looking at the thematic list, which includes such headings as animal rights and globalization. Those persons looking for historical materials will want to click on over to the “Archive”, which includes an interactive timeline which traces the history of documentary film making in Britain. Along the way are films such as 1933’s “Industrial Britain” and 1953’s “Operation Hurricane”, which documents the creation and testing of Britain’s first atomic bomb. Watch Videos Online.

Awards. 2006 was a pioneering year for online video, user-created content and the YouTube community. New forms of entertainment have been created popular culture radicalized. Now it's time to reflect on what a tremendous year it was and recognize the best of the best during the first YouTube Video Awards. See this year's as selected by millions of users.
