Volunteer Of The Month. James Denier has been an outstanding DIVA volunteer. He has, as a member of the Center's Media Art Committee, organized, staged, and managed both single and multiple day events. The Media Arts Committee expresses its appreciation and kudos for all that James does to make sure Center programming is professionally presented and that patrons feel welcomed while attending DIVA events. James is currently a co-host and program organizer for the 'Best Of The Eugene Film Festival Series' at DIVA.
He says, "I've been involved with visual and performing arts in some capacity almost all of my life. In this last year of volunteering at DIVA, I have been so very pleased to get involved with so many worthwhile projects. The highlight being the interaction with artists and audiences of the arts in Eugene. It is a rare thing that the creators and those who appreciate the work have a chance to connect on such a personal level. It has been great to see the kind of community building that DIVA facilitates. I'm very proud to be a small part of that."

DIVA CENTER GALLERY EXHIBITS
|
Five exciting new exhibits open at the DIVA Center on Friday, March 2nd at 5:30 PM. Join gallery artists who will be available to talk about their work during the Lane Council of Arts First Friday Art Walk. Included in the DIVA show for March are:
Dreamworks: Donna Fountain, Kathy Haydon, Hilary Russell and Pat Arrera. This is a four woman exhibit inspired by their dreams, meditations, reading and inner/spiritual musings. Drawn together by friendship and a passion for their studio work they occasionally exhibit as a group. Though each speaks with a different voice there is a harmony in their collective effort.
Sticks and Stones: The 'Twining Rivers Basket Society' exhibit includes work by Mariana Mace, Donna Sakamoto Crispin, Lei McCornack, Patricia Montoya Donohue and Sheila Tasker. The hand making of baskets provides these artists with the opportunity to express their creative visions through the use of natural materials. Whatever form, practical or pure fantasy, a basket contains abundance.
East of Eden: Rich Bergeman. More than 15 prints in the show depict abandoned ranches and homesteads, ghost towns, Native American petroglyphs, and landscapes from Oregon's "other half." Bergeman uses 5x7 and 8x10 large-format view cameras as well as digital cameras, and prints in the platinum process, a rediscovered printing medium that was more popular 100 years ago than it is today.
Sketches of Women: Howard Hauskneat. Sketching is a joyous dance of ink and paper, line and space, repetition and improvisation. Just a few strokes can express so much. The drawings in this collection were accomplished with models and were produced in the moment; no reworking of the drawings ensued.
Painting is My Way of Dancing: JulieAnn Mills –Testi 'A Release Of My Inner Soul'. JulieAnn was born in Southern California with Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita characterized by locked joints. This condition results in her working with a brush and pencil held by her teeth. She works in gauche, watercolor and a combination of the two. All Of Mills-Testi’s work is courtesy of Mouth and Foot Painters of which she is a member artist.

Americans in Paris, 1. Several decades before Ernest Hemingway came to Paris to spend some quality time with Gertrude Stein near the Jardin de Luxembourg; there were a multitude of other American artists inspired by the City of Lights. Paris was, without a doubt, the art capital of the 19th century, and as Henry James remarked in 1887 "when to-day we look for 'American art' we find it mainly in Paris." Staff members at The Metropolitan Museum of Art feel the same way, and they have organized this lovely online exhibit to complement a fine in situ exhibit on the visual arts produced by artists such as Mary Cassatt, Thomas Eakins, and John Singer Sargent during their time there. Visitors can make their way through all eight galleries, and they can also use a zoom feature to pick up on various levels of detail within each work. (Scout Report) Vist Museum.

Kohler Art Library: The Artists’ Book Collection. The Kohler Art Library at University of Wisconsin-Madison presents this illustrated database that indexes roughly 760 titles from its collection of over 800 artists' books. The database can be searched by book title, creator's name, publisher, date, or subjects. Other search terms relate to types of book structures, bindings, medium/technique, and contributors. Each record in the database has either a short description of the book's contents or a complete transcription of the colophon, the short paragraph traditionally placed at the end of a book, that tells about its production. In addition, for slightly more than half the books, several images are included. For example, the colophon for From a housewife's diary, by Claire Van Vliet, states that the "covering is dish towels bound by James Bicknell", and the image included shows that the towels are red plaid.
