DIVA Receives $10,000.00 Grant. DIVA has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Faye and Lucille Stewart Foundation by students in the University of Oregon's PPPM 607 Graduate Seminar in Philanthropy class. Randy Stender and Becky Guy attended the student presentations on DIVA's behalf.
Only the University of Oregon offers graduate students the opportunity to both study and practice philanthropy by making a substantial grant to a nonprofit organization. The Faye and Lucille Stewart Foundation provides $10,000 to the course, and it is up to the collective wisdom of the students to grant it responsibly.
At the end of the academic term, graduate student teams present their persuasive arguments for donating the $10,000 gift to "their" selected organization in a presentation. The class reaches a consensus on which organization should receive the funds.
Official presentation of the award will be made on Monday, November 27th on the University of Oregon campus. This was the second time the Center had been up for consideration and the first time it has been given an award.

DIVA Board Retreat. The DIVA Board, Committee chairs, and staff gathered at the Center on November 19th for a four hour brainstorming session about the future of the Center,
The first half of the afternoon focused on three program areas: Exhibits, Media Arts, and Education. The discussion was lead by Alice Parman (pictured at left) who also conducted last year's retreat. Parman facilitated the group's identification of three key issues in each area and then organized volunteers who will work toward developing solutions.
The second half of the meeting addressed financial issues and what the Board can do to pursue adequate funding to cover Center costs. A committee was formed to look at the three top ways to fund raise and how those might be quickly addressed.
The retreat was followed by a third anniversary birthday party celebrating the contribution of those who have helped the center grow and become a part of the cultural scene downtown.

John Holdway DIVA Volunteer of the Month. John Holdway donates his time every week to facilitate the drop-in figure drawing class at DIVA. Additionally, he serves on the Exhibit Committee, and has been instrumental in planning the upcoming tattoo art exhibit.
John says, "'Artists suffer from disassociation'. That is a quote from a conversation I had with the artist Michele Russo in Portland a few years before he passed away. It probably has always been true. I spend a lot of time alone myself making art. I have to make an effort to seek out kindred spirits. DIVA is a space of kindred spirits who love art. DIVA fills an important place in our community for artists and art lovers. It is my pleasure for me to do what I can to to help."

Main Gallery – Oregon Fiber Artists (15 artists) "Elements" Oregon Fiber Artists is a diverse group of textile and fiber artists brought together by a common interest in creating and exhibiting work in their chosen medium. They are committed to extending their creative skills, and challenging the boundaries of textile art. Their individual members have been making art in various media for many years, and revel in the diversity of style and form that the group represent. The exhibit features a range of pieces within the broad theme ELEMENTS, varying in size, technique, and interpretation, while focusing on the discrete possibilities for visual expression offered by fiber manipulation. First Friday Reception. Join us for Lane Arts Council's First Friday ArtWalk - DIVA is the first stop this month. We will be celebrating the opening of two new exhibits for December with a reception from 5:30-8:30pm.
HIV Alliance - HIV Awareness through Art. This exhibit is created and sponsored by HIV Alliance. HIV Alliance is gathering artwork, poetry and photography from HIV positive individuals and their friends and family to help create awareness of the on-going struggle with HIV that many Americans still face. The exhibit will focus on the experiences of people living with HIV, how the disease and those affected by it are perceived by society, and will honor friends, family and community members who have passed because of HIV related complications. The show will open on Dec. 1, in conjunction with World AIDS Day 2006. HIV Awareness Through Art
Mary Birckhead - The Urban Shaman. Mary Birckhead describes her art as a record of her spiritual journey this way, "The art that you see in this show is a 10-year focus on my spiritual life. My art reflects feelings that I could not put into words [and] as dark as I felt I was at the time, the art does not necessarily reflect this. There are four phases of art that are being shown. One is my diary series, which has hand made paper, my jewelry, clay, and pen and ink drawings. Each of these phases expresses different aspects of this process. The most recent, the pen and ink drawings, still express some resistance to who I am. However, in my opinion, I am being more precise in the feelings that I try to portray. In my pieces, I show my own symbology. These are images that I use over, and over during stressful, searching, and soulful moments. This exhibit will be comprised of about a dozen framed paper pieces or pen and ink drawings along with sculpture and jewelry.
Continuing exhibits include: Oregon Fiber Artists - Elements; C. DeLaittre - Figured State(d) Figure; Tallmadge Doyle - Mysterium Cosmographicum; Judith M. Sander - Phantasms; Paul Shirkey - Inherent Patterns

December 2 - Human Monster Presents: Blue Sabbath Black Cheer
Time: 8pm - DIVA Center
Admission: $5 sug. donation
Human Monster Productions hosts a final evening of sound and vision that defies category, and tends to be loud, (you've been warned) with Seattle's Blue Sabbath Black Cheer and Du Hexen Hase being joined by local folks Vivimancer and Avoid the Future Shadow. Vidsonic projections may, or may not, be provided by the Phantom JiRCS. You'll have to show up to find out.
Blue Sabbath Black Cheer is a volume-dealing black acid noise band utilizing guitars, bass, vocals, found and prepared sounds formed in the winter of 2005 by wm.Rage and Levi Berner in Seattle, WA. Stan Reed soon joined, followed not too far after by Jeff Stentorian, as Levi left Seattle to quite literally sit in a field in his native Alaska ˆ although he still contributes source material in the form of cassettes used in live and recorded situations. As a trio, BSBC began performing live with a first appearance at the Victoria Noise Fest, in Victoria, British Columbia, May 2006, followed immediately by a since unrelenting assault on Seattle‚'s warehouse and house show scene. In Sept 06, Jeff left the band, checking himself into rehab and since disappearing, leaving BSBC as a battle formation duo that further gained notoriety in Seattle for violently loud extreme audio performances.

Animator vs. Animation
"An animator faces his own animation in deadly combat. The battlefield? The Flash interface itself.
A stick figure is created by an animator with the intent to torture. The stick figure drawn by the animator will be using everything he can find - the brush tool, the eraser tool - to get back at his tormentor. It's resourcefulness versus power. Who will win? You can find out yourself.
This took three long months. i think it's worth it."
