The Oregon Fiber Artists group exhibits in the large gallery with work by: Ruth Bass, Carolyn Fredrickson, Janet Hiller, Luch Kingsley, Jean McDaniel, Jae McDonald, Betsy Norris, Susan Norris, Phyllis Prom, Jeanne Schulz, Marlene Singer, Sandra Soliem, Carolyn Wirtz, and Sally Zehrung.
The Friends of Hendricks Park has works in the community room including pieces by Sarkis Antikajian, Brent Burkett, Mark Clarke, Margaret Coe, Ellen Gabehart, Hannah Goldrich, James Guay, Madeleine Liepe, Charles Little, Jaqueline Lukowski, Joh O'Brien, Marilyn Robert, Phil Roberts, Lilly Robertson, Martin Sage and Gary Tepfer. HIV Alliance will exhibit begining December 1st.

Thanks Volunteers! Rebecca Guy writes, "I want to thank Judy, Anna, Scott, M.E., Heidi, Kendra, and Mari for helping with the exhibit change. We had 76 artists who had work in our last show, which made the take down more complicated, and then we put up seven new exhibits. It went very smoothly thanks to all of their help!"
"I also want to thank the volunteers for helping with the VIP Reception and the First Friday Opening: Eric, Elaine, Anna, Alegria, Julie, Kendra, Thomas, and Kristi."

DIVA Volunteer of the Month M.E. Dunlap. Every two months DIVA needs dependable volunteers to help change over all of our exhibits. M.E. Dunlap, of the Exhibit Support and Artist Services program, has been helping out for six months with this process, often times giving up an entire Sunday to do so. She brings experience and knowledge that is so important in order to get our seven galleries changed. M.E. is willing to work with artists on designing their exhibits or just patch and paint the walls, whatever needs to be done. More recently, she joined our Artist Services committee as well, which has been in need of new members. Look for her in November's Artist Salon to lead the group in conducting a critique. She says, "I am an advocate for the arts, whether I am in the classroom, in my studio, or out in the community. Now more than ever we need to support the arts. Volunteering at DIVA allows me to support Artists and give back what has been given to me. That being, the wonder, freedom, and connections made through the artist process." (Photo: Anna Hults)

DIVA DRAWS CROWD. The VIP Reception and First Friday ArtWalk drew an estimated crowd of about 400 to the DIVA Center. The large number of artist exhibiting was one reason so many people visited. Family, friends, and fellow artists filled the galleries so that at times even elbowroom became scarce. People seemed to linger and enjoy the fellowship others interested in the visual arts. DIVA's large room and more cozy galleries provided special places for people to gather and enjoy their time viewing art and meeting one another.

Susan Lehman's Virtual Collage Show Online. DIVA art instructor Susan Lehman has a showing of her latest collages online along with the work of Pat Snyder called Musings from the Oregon Coast. The collages are at a vitual gallery run by Dale Copeland in New Zealand who maintains the site, curates shows, and puts the International Collage Exchange together every year. See Susan's work online through the month of November.

Schnitzer: A Way with Words: The Calligraphic Art of Jung Do-jun. Calligraphy in Korea (as elsewhere in East Asia) was traditionally viewed as the highest of the visual arts, though for the most part it remains little known or appreciated in the west. This exhibition will not only introduce the work of the contemporary master calligrapher Jung Do-jun, but will also introduce Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art audiences to the art of calligraphy more generally. Exhibit runs through January 7, 2007.

Fall MusEvenings at the Schnitzer. Join patrons for new experiences and exciting opportunities drawn directly from the works in the galleries. Events are free with museum admission unless otherwise noted. Enjoy MusEvenings! every Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. Full calendar of events available online.

Jerry Baron at Jacobs Gallery. Then & Now is a retrospective exhibit of paintings by Oregon painter Jerry Baron. This exhibiton will illustrate Baron's diverse artistic talents over the last 25 years and his wonderful use of color. His style is bold and many of his works carry social….sometimes satirical, even humorous ……messages.

November 10 - Gabriela Martínez: Andean Rituals - Peru
Sponsor: DIVA Media Arts Committee - Second Friday Film Forum (FDV)
Time: 7:00 PM Friday
Gen. Admission: $5.00
Student w/school I.D. $3.00

Gabriela Martínez is a documentary filmmaker whose work has centered primarily on the Peruvian Andes where she was born, although her work includes topics dealing with other Latin American countries as well. She was trained in Cultural Anthropology at the Universidad San Antonio Abad del Cuzco (Peru) and in Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts at San Francisco State University. She has earned her doctoral degree in Communication and Society at the School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Oregon where she is currently an Assistant Professor. Martinez’s research focuses on international communication and transnationalism. Her creative work is the result of her interest in indigenous and mestizo cultures and societies, and the diverse forces, both local and global that help maintain or transform their ways of life.

Qoyllur Rit'i: A Woman's Journey (57 minutes). Qoyllur Rit'i is an annual pilgrimage ritual with origins in pre-Columbian Peru. Although Catholic imagery has become part of the event, the pilgrimage is still centered on paying respects to sacred glaciers in the Andean chain. The documentary captures in a three-fold narrative Holly Wissler's role as the mayordomo or sponsor of
one of Qoyllur Rit'i’s dance groups. The preparations leading to the pilgrimage and main ceremony, and the history of this sacred place revered by thousands of pilgrims. This is the compelling story of an American woman who gets to be chosen for a role usually reserved for a Peruvian male or couple. Through her personal journey we learn of ancient traditions that despite the influx of tourists and globalization remain taking place and touching the lives of the locals, as well of newcomers

Ch’ullacuy (40 minutes) Ch’ullacuy is an ancient ceremony that is still important and widely performed by alpaca and llama herders throughout the Peruvian Andes. This documentary filmed in a remote community in the highlands of Pitumarca (south of Cuzco) captures the ritual performed by a family of herders, showing the identity and survival of an ethnic group who have preserved crucial aspects of their Inca language, culture, and religion.

Mexico as Muse. (Scout Report) Tina Modotti and Edward Weston, photographers active in the first half of the 20th century, lived and worked together in Mexico for several years, and both believed that the country - and each other - provided an important source of inspiration for their art. This exhibition explores the intersections of Modotti and Weston's personal and artistic lives. Modotti learned photography from Weston, and her pictures, depicting workers on construction sites, loading bananas for shipment, or reading a Communist newspaper, are more politically motivated than Weston's. Modotti, however, was the first of the two to photograph still life up close, creating images of flowers. Weston took up still life as well, creating some of his most famous pictures of vegetables and shells. The online exhibition includes film of Modotti and Weston, an interview with art historian Patricia Albers, photographs by and of both artists, as well as digital versions of letters, albums and scrapbooks. Visit Web Site.
Sound of Light. (Apple) Takagi Masakatsu is a visual artist and musician whose work knows no aesthetic borders. He has presented video installations and performed live at art spaces around the world. He also produces music videos, as well as music for commercials and film. He has toured with musician and remix artist David Sylvian.
Res magazine named Takagi one of the 2006 RES 10, an annual selection of emerging artists who will influence the worlds of film, video, design, advertising, music, and media art in the upcoming year and beyond. See documentary online. Note: this is both the story of Masakatsu as artist and the Apple products he uses. It is very well done.
