DIVA Nominated for Award. The DIVA Center was nominated as a candidate for "Best Alternative Film Venue" in this year's Eugene Weekly's "Best Of" competition. Daniel Heila represented the Center at this year's award ceremony held on October 20th. He writes about his experience, "A colorful crowd in a definite party mood gathered at the McDonald Theatre on Friday night. Most folks were dressed to the nines and the lounge was full of nervous tipsy runners-up. The show in the theatre was well produced and featured a "Late show with David Letterman" style stage band. Awards were announced by various local Celebes and handed to the winners by amazon beauties of various genders. The best alternative film venue was the second award announced and went to Bijou Theater. Alas, DIVA was not chosen. There were no second or third places announced. The Bijou did not have a representative present to receive the award so it was a bit anti-climactic. I briefly considered running up and receiving it for them and plugging DIVA but the announcers moved quickly on to the next award. The rest of the evening proved to be a quintessentially Eugene event."

Special Screening at DIVA Center. The "Best of the 32nd Annual NW Film Festival" comes to Eugene on November 4th with two screenings at 7 and 9 PM. An anonymous donation to DIVA has made it possible to negotiate the screening of this excellent program for the first time in Eugene. It is expected that the outstanding collection of indie film will be popular with audiences. The 33rd Annual festival begins in Portland on November 11th. The Eugene event provides a "taste of the fest" for those who might venture down to Portland for this year's event.

DIVA Does Well As Media Arts Venue. According to DIVA Board member Carolezoom, the attendance at the Center's Media Art Events is comparable to that found in Portland where she now lives. She notes, as an example, that the NW Film Center often has audiences numbering in the teens for many events. She indicates that other venues throughout Portland have audiences of comparable attendance to that of the Center. Carole says that DIVA should be encouraged with the numbers of people it attracts given that it has no advertising budget and must rely on the support of the press to inform the public about its events.

DARLING DARLING (13 mins.) By Matthew Lessner, Roseburg, OR. The only thing more nerve wracking than meeting your date's family right before the prom, is meeting the Darling family right before the prom JUDGE'S AWARD: "A fine exercise in sweet surreal suburban behavior, centering on a few priceless visual conceits, audacious lighting, and a superb performance by Mr. Michael Cerra." (Michael Almereyda)
-
AMBER (5 mins.) By Jen Morgan, Vancouver, BC. A truly unique 3-D animated film that examines the dynamic between two sisters confronting issues of death and responsibility.
-
INCONVENIENCE (17 mins) John Penhall Vancouver, BC. Henry has sold more lottery tickets than he can remember, but has no qualms about telling his customers that they're wasting their money. But his tune changes when a series of events places the winning ticket in his hands, causing him to forsake everything to keep his "fortune". HONORABLE MENTION: "Finely-detailed storytelling and a lovable central performance by its lead actor. (Best use of a Chinese-speaking mouse). " (Michael Almereyda)
-
HELLO, THANKS (8 mins.) By Andrew Blubaugh, Portland, OR. Weaving off the cuff commentary and interviews with re-enactments and text, this short film recounts the director's year in the personal ads, looking for romance but having his true love affair with the words themselves. HONORABLE MENTION "..for an uncomfortably honest and unique description of the perils of narcissism." (Michael Almereyda)
-
(GONE) ONE MOMENT TO THE NEXT (7 mins.) By Morgan Hobart, Portland, OR. The natural world collides with white noise stereo modulations in this eerie, enigmatic experiment. "Things are coming to a head." (Michael Almereyda)
-
GEEK LIKE ME (18 mins.) By John Vechey, Seattle, WA Chopper is a geek, but not the kind that wears a pocket protector. -
DANDELION (7 mins.) By Grace Carter, Holly Andres, Portland, OR. A stream of consciousness tour through the filmmakers' memories of the loss of their mothers. Charles Sheeler: Across Media
|
Charles Sheeler: Across Media. (Scout Report) With a body of work that combined the machine aesthetic of Marcel Duchamp and a subject matter that was of great concern to Americans of his generation, Charles Sheeler had a decades-long artistic career that is closely associated with the rise of American modernism. This online exhibition is designed to complement an in situ exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago, and overall, it does a nice job of conveying a sense of Sheeler’s work and focus. Interested users may wish to begin by reading an overview of Sheeler’s life, and also taking a look at the brief, yet thoughtful, bibliography of related works that tell the story of his life and times. Of course, the real essence of the site is the “Selected Works” area. Here, Sheeler’s devotees (and new converts) can look over works such as “Church Street El” and "Ballet Mechanique". Visit Site.
