Jung Do-jun at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art. (JSMA) Calligraphy in Korea (as elsewhere in East Asia) was traditionally viewed as the highest of the visual arts, though for the most part it remains little known or appreciated in the west. This exhibition will not only introduce the work of the contemporary master calligrapher Jung Do-jun, but will also introduce Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art audiences to the art of calligraphy more generally.
Jung Do-jun has exhibited widely in Korea, and has had the honor of being selected to execute large memorial tablets and inscriptions at several imperial palaces in Seoul. He has also participated in numerous individual and group shows in China, Japan, Germany, Belgium, France, and elsewhere.
One of the most compelling aspects of Jung’s art is its variety. In addition to his mastery of traditional calligraphic styles (in both Chinese characters and Korean hangeul script), he also creates very expressive, modernistic works that many viewers will relate to from a purely formal point of view. Jung Do-jun’s artworks exemplify the exciting and creative possibilities that keep calligraphy relevant as a modern art form.

Nigerian film industry and "Song Poems" at UO. Director, Jamie Meltzer, is currently a visiting assistant professor at Vassar. He will be on campus on Friday, October 13 and Monday, October 16. Meltzer is an exciting young director of documentaries and will screen his first film "Off the Charts: The Song-Poem Story" (which debuted on PBS), and premiere his new feature on "Nollywood."
"Off the Charts: The Song-Poem Story"is a fascinating, at times unsettling, documentary that exposes the strange underworld of the song-poem industry. In this little known subculture, "ordinary people" respond to come-on ads on the back pages of magazines ("Send in Your Lyrics and Make $50,000 in royalties!"), mailing in their heartfelt but often bizarre poems to "music industry" companies that, for a fee, turn those poems into real recordings. Through interviews with several song-poem writers, the jaded producers and musicians who set their words to music, and a few of the growing number of zealous song-poem connoisseurs, "Off the Charts" explores a truly unique, never-before-seen slice of Gothic Americana "Off the Charts" will be shown on Friday, October 13, at 7 pm in Willamette 110. The film is one hour long and will be followed by a Q & A with director Jamie Meltzer.
"Welcome to Nollywood" is about the Nigerian film industry, known as "Nollywood". It has had a huge impact in the last ten years. It is now the most popular cinema in all of West Africa, more popular even than imports of Hollywood or Bollywood films. Nollywood is the third largest film industry in the world, generating 286 million dollars per year for the Nigerian economy. And yet this vibrant, profitable industry is virtually unknown outside of Africa. Jamie Meltzer has created a fascinating look into this newly emerging film culture, exploring its peculiar inner workings, economic challenges, and diverse array of colorful characters and films in his new documentary, "Welcome to Nollywood." "Welcome to Nollywood" will be shown on Monday, October 16, at 7 pm in Willamette 110. The film is one hour long and will be followed by Q & A with director Jamie Meltzer.

Do You Like Watching Films? The Eugene Film Festival will soon start accepting submissions and Thaddeus Konar is creating a team of film reviewers. Last year the EFF team reviewed over 300 movies, this year with a longer submission period the total may reach 450-500. Each movie ideally should be evaluated by about 10 reviewers. The evaluation itself is simple – you watch the movie (either by yourself or in the group setting) and assign a number between 1 and 10 (with 10 being perfect and 1 a total dog). The submissions will start by the end of October and will continue until July. Please contact Thaddeus Konar at if you are interested.

The Lady from Sockholm is a pun-lover's dream film. It's loaded with so many sock puns and clever film references that you'll wonder how Producer/Writer Lynn Lamousin came up with all this stuff. The Colors of Clay. (Scout Report) This web exhibition from The Getty takes you on a gently guided tour of the various ways in which Athenian vase painters decorated clay vessels between 550 and 340 B.C. Eight styles and techniques are explored: Bilingual, Coral Red, Six's Technique, Added Clay and Gilding, Outline Drawing, White Ground, Plastic, and Kerch Style. Zoomable images of artifacts, textual captions, and, in a few cases, audio curators' commentary are used at the site to explain the eight techniques. Learn, for example, that the Bilingual style is called that because pieces have red-figure painting on one side, and black-figure painting on the other, hence they are bilingual. Coral Red was only used for a short time, and by only a few workshops, but this type of piece was prized since the color was enhanced by wine. Visit Web Site.
