New York Filmmaker to visit DIVA. Filmmaker Anna Holtzman will screen her documentary, "Subway Dreams" at 8 PM on Saturday, September 30th at the DIVA Center. The hour-long film offers viewers a glimpse of where subway musicians reside, how they afford to live and where their motivation originates to drag their instruments through the turnstiles every day.
Anna notes, "What I was hoping to capture in "Subway Dreams" is that these musicians transform a space that is potentially the foulest, grittiest place in the city. They take it and through their music make it into this almost spiritual temple of New York. When I hear music like that, it takes me out of that hardened, annoyed mind-set that we all walk around with in this town." Read Review: Time Out New York.

Earth to Ear. Ear to the Earth, is a unique festival of sound art, music, and ecology that will take place October 6 - 14 in New York City. The festival is a week-long celebration of environmental sound and image with installations, panels, and concerts. Conceived and organized by Electronic Music Foundation, the aim of the festival is to inspire sensitivity to our natural and human environments through sound and foster engagement in environmental issues. For a brief background statement, follow this link.

Sound Artists at DIVA. The DIVA Center has become known by sound artists from all over the world as the venue to stop at while on a west coast tour. Don Haugen's Human Monster Productions continues to wow Eugene with a slate of national and international noise artists. Although, to some, noise events are unpleasant, discordant, and painful. To others, especially noise artists working with "non-musical" sources, these events provide a sense of acoustic exploration and auditory experiences uncharacteristic of more structured musical performances. Many artists refer to their work simply as "noise" and not "noise music". This October and November, Eugene will have the opportunity to experience some of the best noise artists thanks to Human Monster Productions and the DIVA Center 110 W. Broadway. In a series of events, artists from New York, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, and Pittsburgh, will give performances at the Center along with local and regional performers, Some of the artist include: Carlos Giffoni, Venezuela, Jazkamer- from Norway, Neglected Receptors out of Minneapolis, The Microwaves arriving from Pittsburgh, and many regional and local artists as well. See the Media Arts Calendar for days, times, and descriptions.

In The Eye of the Beholder. Photographs have never been fully valid sources of truthfulness. The selective eye of the photographer has always included or excluded contextual information important to understanding the validity of a photographed scene.
Today's digital photography, by which a pop can is inserted as a product placement, or a member of a group is removed with a few clicks of the computer's mouse, has made the photograph even more questionable as a resource of accurate information.
However, we have never really needed technology to distort the validity of photographic content. Our minds do an excellent job of choosing the meaning of an image as filtered through our past experiences, prejudices, viewpoints, and the ability to deconstruct imagery - or "read pictures".
A recent article in the Wall Street Journal's editorial section makes the point with the photo seen above. The picture was taken on 9/11 and shows a group of people in the foreground with the Trade Center Towers in the distance. When this picture was recently made available it created quite a stir because it doesn't fit our mental image of what that day was all about. The photograph is open to interpretation by the eye of the beholder. To understand more about the power of images read the informative article, Looking Through a Lens: One 9/11 picture, thousands of words: Rorschach of meanings, by Richard B. Woodward which recently appeared in the Wall Street Journal. It is an eye-opening article about the images we see and how we understand them through our own personal filters. Dioramas: American Museum of Natural History (Scout Report) Many decades ago, the diorama reigned supreme in the world of natural history museums. After a long period of decline, there was a recrudescence in these seemingly simple and straightforward pedagogical tools. Through video introductions offered by senior project manager Steve Quinn, visitors will become intimately familiar with those dioramas that replicate the domains of the lion, the mountain gorilla, the mountain goat, and several others. After these vignettes, visitors can take some of the “Virtual Tours” offered here, and then download some of the audio files for use during their own visit to the museum. As a coda, visitors can learn about some of the artists who worked on creating both the background and foreground paintings of these dioramas over the past one hundred years.
