The Catalyst - A new DIVA newsletter in the mail. This month DIVA is launching our very first printed newsletter that will go out in the mail to our members. We have decided to call it The Catalyst because one of our goals is to act as a catalyst for visual arts activities in downtown Eugene. The purpose of this newsletter is to recognize our generous donors and inform them by mail of our upcoming activities. Currently we aim to produce The Catalyst twice a year, but this may change based on the response we receive. If you would like to view our Fall 2006 edition, please click on the pdf to download.

Invitation to Join AMP. Every artist could use some help finding what they need, such as collaborators, a support system, venues, places to sleep, tour personnel, and many other resources. Artists locally and worldwide need better ways to connect with both people and services. AMP, the Artists Meeting Place and Resource Collective, is a physical and virtual worldwide collective of over 1200 artists (including musicians, painters, filmmakers, photographers, performers, and many more) in nearly 40 countries networking together to build and support local and international artists, create new art communities, and enhance those that already exist. Oriented towards creating community, AMP is much more of an OurSpace than it is like MySpace. AMP's two main goals are quick, easy and useful creative connections, and a network of ways to make your life easier, better, bigger, and more interesting. AMP can save you money and time; expand your creative network and the possibilities that you can see for yourself; consolidate, organize, and clarify information; and open doors that you never even knew existed. Enduring Outrage: Editorial Cartoons by Herblock. (Scout Report) Legendary political cartoonist Herb Block left no pressing issue (or political party) unturned during his long career, which spanned most of the 20th century. Along the way, he picked up three Pulitzer Prizes, including one in 1973 that he won with his Washington Post colleagues for their coverage of the Watergate scandal. In 2002, the Herb Block Foundation donated over 14,000 of his original drawings and more than 50,000 preparatory sketches to the Library of Congress. A very small, yet excellent, selection of some of those renderings may be viewed at this site, which complements an in situ exhibit at the American Treasures Gallery in Washington, D.C. The drawings here include several that deal with the nuclear power plant disaster at Chernobyl, the Republican Party’s so-called “Contract with America” in the 1990s, and television campaign advertisements. Each drawing is accompanied by a brief explanation of the work, along with specific information on when each cartoon originally appeared. A timeline of Herb Block’s life and a checklist of objects that are included in the exhibit round out the site. The site might also be well used by political science and government in order to complement more traditional classroom materials. Visit Web Site.

Smithsonian Photography Initiative (Scout Report) This year, the Smithsonian Photography Initiative (SPI), which is dedicated to promoting the use of Smithsonian photographic resources - roughly 13 million images located in approximately seven hundred collections -, launched a new Web site. The Web site serves several purposes: an online repository of images, a gateway to exhibitions, and a community where visitors can find not only images, but can also connect with others with similar interests, ranging from experts to amateurs. The site also includes Enter the Frame, an interactive interface where visitors can browse images from 19 Smithsonian museums, arrange selected images into sequences, and tag, or apply descriptive keywords to images. Sequences can then be saved, and viewed by subsequent visitors.  Visit Web Site.
