First All Member Show. The Center's galleries are filled with the First Annual All-Member Exhibit! Works include paintings, installations, ceramics, media arts, and other works by DIVA Members. The August 31st reception attracted over 100 people (left).
This year's theme is the "Edge Effect". In nature, the "Edge Effect" describes the activity that occurs where different ecosystems meet. DIVA is poised at the "edge" of a cultural change for downtown Eugene. DIVA Members were invited to submit works that illustrated, demonstrated or evoked, their own edge effects for exhibition. This exhibit illustrates the creative diversity of our Center's membership.
The exhibit will be on display the months of September and October and will showcase some of the best work in the region. See full list of Participating Artist.

Volunteer Committees Build The Center. It is through the contributed time of dedicated volunteers who work on DIVA committees such as Organization and Policy, Exhibition, Development, Fundraising, Membership, Event Planning, and Media Arts, that the Center continues to grow and develop. Over the coming weeks we will introduce readers to these unique working groups. This week we focus on the Media Arts Committee.
|
Media Arts Committee: DIVA has become a regional center for time-based arts including film, video, sound, digital media, performance and installation thanks to the dedication of the Media Arts Committee often called the "MAC" by members.
The MAC began as the Second Friday Film Forum nearly three years ago with the goal of screening independent films once a month. It didn't take long for the group, currently 20-members strong, to dedicate itself to presenting a diversity of Center events focusing on the cinematic and digital time based arts including: independent films by emerging artists, experimental video and music performances, workshops by visiting media specialists, and annual major events like the Improvised Music and Moving Image Festival in December and the Third Annual OpenLens Film Festival in January.
The Media Arts Committee has staged nearly 200 events since it began bringing to the center some of the top people in media arts including: Screenwriter/Director Susan Emshwiller; Producer/Director Neal Miller; Canadian filmmaker Alex MacKenzie, Portland Artist Matt McCormick, media consultant Morrie Warshawski, and Carl Stone and Emil Beaulieau, world renown electro-acoustic composers and musicians.
The DIVA Media Arts Program welcomes hundreds of visitors to the Center, many of whom are visiting for the first time. Time-based media programs at the Center have proven to be critical in the success of DIVA as a cultural resource in the heart of Eugene. For more about the media art events visit the Media Arts Calendar or read more online about the goals of the Media Arts Program.

Happy Birthday Philo T. Farnsworth. Philo T. Farnsworth is a little-known historical figure who made a huge impact on culture. On Sept. 7, 1927, he carried out the first successful demonstration of electronic television. The mental image of how a television picture tube might work came to him based on his observations as a 14 year old boy plowing a field laying down one row or line after another. In his research on TV he saw the connection between the lines of the plowed field and those an electron beam scanning, line by line, across a phosphorus screen. Farnsworth was born 100 years ago on August 19, 1906. See also: Farnovision web site.

TBA Festival in Portland. Portland's Time-Based Art Festival, September 7-17, is a contemporary art festival of regional, national, and international artists presenting theatre, dance, music, film, visual exhibition and installation. PICA presents moments of movement and imagery under bridges, over rivers, on stages and throughout Portland. The TBA Festival examines and celebrates every form of contemporary art and is the only festival of its kind in North America.
A constant confluence of artists and audiences, TBA bridges discipline and geography with morning workshops, afternoon lectures, evening performances, outdoor happenings, and late night activity. The wall between artist and audience is very thin, all you have to do is walk through.

Visitors can navigate the site in English or Maori, and a good place to start is the Learning section of the site. First-time users will want to take a look at Tai Awatea, or Knowledge Net, which offers interactive modules that offer insight into the peoples of the Pacific Islands and New Zealands famed sheep farming industry. TEDTalks. (Scout Report) TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, and Design, and this acronym is familiar to those in the know as an annual conference that brings together talented persons from each of these fields every year to Monterey, CA. The price of attending the conference is a bit steep, but never fear, as this site will give users access to some of these provocative and enlightening sessions presented at their various gatherings. Through a partnership with BMW and New York Public Radio, the talks can be viewed in their entirety, or visitors can just listen to the audio portion if they so wish. Currently, there are several dozen presentations, including those by Jimmy Wales (the founder of Wikipedia), Nicholas Negroponte, and Al Gore. The wide range of persons selected for the annual TED conference is rather appealing, and overall, there area number of intriguing ideas presented throughout their number. Visit the TED Web Site.

Blackbird: An Online Journal of Literature and the Arts (Scout Report) Started in 2002, the online journal Blackbird brings many literary and artistic traditions together in a format that is both appropriate for the digital age, and one that will delight those interested in poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. The journal is a joint venture between the department of English at Virginia Commonwealth University and the New Virginia Review. Published twice a year, the journal takes a breezy journey through the arts with interviews with Rodney Jones and Lorraine Adams and short pieces by such up-and-comers as Misty Urban and Kathy Flann. The poetry section is quite well-developed, and highlights here include Jennifer Chang’s “Estuary” and Terri Witek’s “Right Over Left”. Overall, Blackbird is a very pleasant find and a model that might serve as an inspiration for other groups seeking to start their own online humanities journal. Visit the Blackbird Web Site.
