Mary Unruh
Executive Director
DIVA Center

Mary Unruh Addresses the Eugene City Club. The DIVA Center was recently awarded the 2006 Downtown Eugene Excellence Award for Arts and Culture by Downtown Eugene Incorporated and the City Club of Eugene. In accepting the award Executive Director Mary Unruh outlined the Center's accomplishments as a growing and dynamic resource for the community.

"On behalf of the board members, staff and volunteers of DIVA, it is my pleasure to accept this award. DIVA will be three years old in November.  In that time we have:

  • Exhibited the work of over 400 artists in more than 100 exhibits in our seven gallery facility and garnered many favorable art reviews;
  • Offered more than 90 multi-session classes and individual workshops with talented art and film instructors in drawing, painting, calligraphy, bookbinding, printmaking, film arts and other subjects for teens and adults;
  • Hosted more than 150 film screenings, film festivals and multi-media events with original work by local and visiting talent; and
  • Created a website that showcases the work of our artists and shares art event information with over 25,000 visitors per month.
We’ve managed all this with three part-time staff, over 150 volunteers and hundreds of donors who have been generous with their dollars and resources like the Oregon Arts Commission, Lane Arts Council, Woodard Family Trust, Oregon Community Foundation.  It is they who have shared our vision of a Downtown Eugene that is prosperous; a downtown Eugene that is a mecca for local, national and global art lovers.
     We see our job as one of creating opportunities:  fine gallery exhibits, quality art classes, cutting edge media arts events.  We have created these opportunities in collaboration with other arts organizations like Maude Kerns, Jacobs Gallery, New Zone, Lane Community College, University of Oregon, Lane Arts Council, Lookingglass, Commission for Children and Families, Eugene Rotary.
    We create opportunities for artists -- to teach, to learn, to socialize and to show their talent.  Opportunities for artists of all ages, levels and talents to reach their personal goals.  Opportunities for youth who don’t yet know their creative potential. We have done this with passion, generosity, resourcefulness and playfulness.
    This award is for the Initiative of all of DIVAs visionaries and leaders, talented artists, supportive volunteers, dedicated staff, generous donors, and all the community members who believe that downtown Eugene will one day be an arts destination – perhaps the world’s greatest city for the arts and outdoors."

Walker Center - a model for the future? DIVA, located in the heart of Eugene's growing cultural district, is evolving into a unique Center dedicated to the visual arts, education, film, video, multimedia, and performance. As the future of DIVA is determined by those whose energy and interest give it form and definition, it is of value to look at other facilities to see how they have evolved as places central to the cultural development of their communities. Over the coming weeks we will present several different models. The first example is the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
    The Walker's stated mission is to be "... a catalyst for the creative expression of artists and the active engagement of audiences, examines the questions that shape and inspire us as individuals, cultures, and communities." The Center offers three program areas: Visual Arts, Film/Video, and Performing Arts.
    The Walker Art Center was established in 1927 as a public art gallery. During the 1960's the Center underwent an expansion and began to reflect contemporary artistic developments including in the areas of film, video, media, and live performances. It expanded its collections and developed a comprehensive educational program. Today, the Walker is internationally recognized as a model of a multidisciplinary arts organization and is a national leader in its innovative approaches to audience engagement.

The first Video Slam of the summer was held at DIVA on August 20th. Artists screened their short videos in a competition following in the tradition of the poetry slam. The audience chose "Dance" by Thaddeus Konar as the slam's winner and his video will beforwarded to the OpenLens Festival competition.
    A goal of this monthly event is to help develop a local video and film community where work can be screened and discussed by peers and the community. The event will continue through October.
    The deadline for submitting videos for the September slam is September 14th. See the Video Slam web site for entry details

Ansel Adams's Photographs of Japanese-American Internment at Manzanar. One might expect that the area around the Sierra Nevada Mountains might be an elegant and obvious choice for the noted photographer Ansel Adams to feature in his work, particularly given his fondness for documenting various aspects of the natural world. But, in the fall of 1943, Adams came to this area, not to document the surrounding landscape, but rather the lives of the Japanese-Americans who had been moved to the nearby Manzanar War Relocation Center. Presented by the American Memory Project, this site presents Adams' 242 original negatives from this endeavor, along with his 209 photographic prints. The collection includes a number of portraits, along with scenes of daily life, sports, and other leisure activities. Additionally, visitors can view the original book, "Born Free and Equal". Published in 1944, the work introduces the reader "...to perhaps twenty individuals ...loyal American citizens who are anxious to get back into the stream of life and contribute to our victory."
