Maude Kerns Celebration. This month's First Friday Art Walk celebrated the life of avante-garde artist Maude Kerns. Kerns was born in Portland on August. 1, 1876, and educated at University of Oregon where she later taught art from 1931 to 1947. She died in Eugene, on October 19, 1965.
In the world of the creative artist, Maude Irvine Kerns experimented with a variety of styles, from realistic landscapes and portraits to abstract exploration of color and form. Her work was noted for its rich color and dynamic composition, at a time when such art was scarcely known on the West Coast. Kerns was also a bold pioneer in the field of art education.
The celebration, held at DIVA, was sponsored by the Maude Kerns Center and the Duchess Committee. The birthday cake provided courtesy of The Sweet Life Patisserie.

First Friday Art Walk. Art Walk participants were greated by DIVA's friendly hosts Rosemarie Atencio and Elissa Tree. Visitors were able to view a new exhibit by the Labyrinth project participants; explore Marilyn Kent's acrylic paintings entitled "Creatures of the Air and Dreams"; and celebrate Maude Kerns' Birthday. "Friendly Faces" by Doug Collins opened in the Maude Kerns Gallery and " What about Burma" went on exhibit in the Community Room (see story below).

August 14 , Lusty Leaf performs "Wide open world, where are you?"
With very special guests Johanna Kunin and silent video by C. Diehl
Time: 8.00 PM - Sharp!
General Admission: $5.00. Student with School I. D. Card: $3.00.
"" is a folk collective based out of Eugene coordinated by Owen Smith. Loose guitar plunks, pots and pans, banjo, keys, and rolling marimba arrangements set the score for wondrous vocal incantations in the vein of Califone, Vashti Bunyan, and Mt. Eerie. The idea is this: wield a web of songs and with these songs tell a story. The result: “Wide open world, where are you?” As narrative tour guides, the group winds its tale through a series of allegorical re-visions of place. “Wide open world, where are you?” is an attempt to engage with the profound earthly marvels which surround us all. This event is all ages; intended for smiles, laughter and open ears.

Dada. The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) presents this web site on the style of art known as Dada to accompany an in situ exhibition at the museum. One of the main components of the site is a selection of Dada art from the museum's permanent collection, with works by artists such as Max Ernst, Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, Kurt Schwitters, and Jean Arp.
There are some interactive features as well - visitors can make a Dadaist poem, by following Tristan Tzara's recipe: cut all the words out of a newspaper article, put them in a paper bag, and shake. Pull the words out one by one and write them down in order to finish the poem.
There is also Fauxtogram, a web near equivalent of Man Ray's photograms, photographs that were made without a camera, by placing objects on light sensitive paper. Finally, visitors can travel virtually to see the Dada exhibition's previous installations at the National Gallery of Art, and the Musée National d'Art Moderne-Centre Pompidou. Visit the DADA Site.( The Scout Report)
