Volume 1, Number 20, July 31-August 13, 2006

Dog Days of Summer. The heat is here and as we head into the dog days of summer it behooves us to slow down a bit and take a break from the weekly task of putting together this newsletter.
We will publish biweekly in August beginning with this issue. The second newsletter is scheduled for August 14- September 3.
Write and let us know about DIVA member news or announcements about community art events. Enjoy the long summer daylight hours and remember to visit DIVA during the Eugene Celebration this coming September 8, 9, and 10 for the opening of a special All-Members Art and Media Exhibit.

August 14th Deadline for First All-Member Exhibition at DIVA Center. Current DIVA Members are invited to submit works for exhibition during September and October 2006. Non-members may exhibit by including the $60 membership fee with their entry fee and form. Membership is good for one year.
This year we have selected the "Edge Effect" as the exhibition's theme. The "Edge Effect" in the world of nature describes the activity that occurs where different ecosystems meet. DIVA is poised at the "edge" of a cultural change for downtown Eugene. As artists and members of DIVA we are active participants in that change. DIVA Members are invited to submit works that illustrate, demonstrate, evoke, emerge from their own "edge effects" for exhibition.
All entries will be accepted, and each member is guaranteed to exhibit one piece in the show. Additional pieces will be considered as space allows. The entry fee is $8 per member, which will pay for exhibit postcards, posters, and flyers promoting the exhibit.
To ensure quality and originality, work that is a copy of the work of others and/or made entirely from a kit or commercial design will not be accepted. All pieces must be dry and ready to be displayed at the time of delivery. All unframed work must have a hanging sleeve or loops/rings on the back of the work. For the protection of both people and work, each piece must fit through a standard door. Works exceeding four feet in width, or of excessive weight or height may be refused entry for this show. Entry forms are available at DIVA and here online (PDF). Application deadline, Monday August 14th. Bring work to DIVA on 12 Noon - 2 PM on Sunday, August 27.

Neal, who now resides in Eugene with his wife Nancy, has had an extensive career in television and feature film production (see filmography). He has been a contributor to the DIVA Media Arts program and has served as a juror on the 2006 OpenLens Festival selection committee. His current feature film, "Raising Flagg", was adapted from "Don’t You Cry For Me" by John D. Weaver. It features Alan Arkin, Glenne Headly, Lauren Holly, Barbara Dana, and Austin Pendleton. New Classroom At DIVA. The Maude Kerns Gallery at DIVA has been moved and a new permanent classroom is being developed in the Gallery's former location. The new classroom will allow the center to offer classes and workshops throughout the day and provide instructors and students with a dedicated teaching and learning environment. Full use of the space will come later this year when the room is converted for instructional use.

OpenLens Festival Announces Host. The DIVA Center's Media Arts Committee has selected Portland filmmaker Kelley Baker as the host for the third annual OpenLens Festival in January. Baker, known as the "Angry Filmmaker", is a champion of the indie video and film artist and pursues quality production through guerilla filmmaking techniques.
Kelley Baker has written and directed three full length features: Kicking Bird (2005), The Gas Cafe (2001), Birddog (1999). He also was the sound designer on six of Gus Van Sant's feature films including, My Own Private Idaho, Good Will Hunting, and Finding Forrester.

Maude Kerns Events. Separate Lives (July 28-September 1) is a small group show features work by four artists including Diane Archer (OR), Cecile Cuddihy (OR), Michele Martini (CA), and Catherine Small (CA). Boundaries: Women Photographers Turn the Camera Around (August 9) The very nature of photography dictates that the image captured by the camera originates physically outside of the artist. But many contemporary women photographers metaphorically, and sometimes physically, "turn the camera around" to capture images reflecting the truly personal. This brief presentation by professional art consultant Dena E. Brown will look at the work of important American women photographers such as Anne Nagle, Sally Mann, Cindy Sherman, and Hanna Wilk. Separate Lives Lecture (August 23): A unique presentation as Diane Archer (OR), a featured artist in Separate Lives, speaks about her work. Through a presentation of images and informal discussion of her pieces featured in the exhibit, Diane will share where artwork comes from and where it is going.

Lois Wadsworth - Lifetime Achievement for Promoting the Arts. Lois Wadsworth has written about DIVA Media Art events and even hosted an Odd Sunday Film Seminar session. On Friday, July 21, she was awarded a Lifetime Achievement award at the Eugene Downtown Incorporated and Eugene City Club annual awards lunch.
Wadsworth was an original founder and executive arts editor of the Eugene Weekly and has provided extensive coverage of Eugene's local arts community since the 1970s. She served as EW's editor-in-chief for several years in the early 1990s. The Eugene Weekly describes Lois' contributions as "sophisticated yet accessible" and as having transformed downtown Eugene into "a vibrant scene that pumps millions into the economy." Over the years, Lois has provided reviews of film, theater, books, poetry and visual arts, in addition to features and various hard news stories.
While still writing for the paper, she went back to school at the UO and earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in journalism in 1988. Lois retired from the Eugene Weekly this year in April, but continues to serve as a contributing arts writer. Lois was nominated for this award as a "Special Category Winner" this year, to commemorate her accomplishments in promoting the arts downtown.

Mathematical Imagery. Artists throughout the millennia have shown a strong affinity for creating works of art that incorporate patterns derived from areas of mathematical inquiry such as representations of infinity, symmetry, and tessellations. Recently, the American Mathematical Society created this website to let the general public view materials related to the relationship between mathematics and art, and it is quite a find. The site is divided into a number of areas, including those that contain articles on the subject written specifically for the site and links to galleries and museums that celebrate the connections between these two disciplines. Many of the articles are quite delightful, and they include pieces on the world of hyperbolic geometries (which are perhaps best known through the work of M.C. Escher) and the visualization of geometric principles through geometry. Source: Scout Report

Deadline: August 1 - Call For Articles. "Music, Sound, and the Moving Image" will be the first international scholarly journal devoted to the study of the interaction between music and sound with the entirety of moving image media film, television, music video, advertising, computer games, mixed-media installation, digital art, live cinema, et alia. To be published by Liverpool University Press and co-edited by Anahid Kassabian (Liverpool University) and Ian Gardiner (Goldsmiths College), the journal will be truly interdisciplinary, inviting contributions across a range of critical methodologies, to include musicology and music analysis, film studies, popular music studies, cultural theory, aesthetics, semiotics, sociology, marketing, sound studies, and music psychology. It is hoped that the journal also will provide an important focus for the similarly diverse and expanding community of media music scholars.
The journal will be published twice a year, beginning January 2007, and its first issues will be open, embracing this diversity of topics and approaches. As it progresses it is intended that themed issues, under a guest editor, will alternate with open issues, perhaps encouraging writers to explore areas under-represented in current literature. The editors welcome contributions offering the broadest interpretation of the journal's title, not only seeking to build upon the existing scholarship on film music and film sound, but also to challenge its theoretical assumptions, and to extend its boundaries to include the full variety of moving image media and traditions. Submissions for the inaugural issue should be e-mailed, by 1 August 2006, as Microsoft Word documents to: Enquiries or requests for style guidelines should also be directed to this address.
