SUPPORT DIVA

Vol.1. Number 15
UP FRONT NEWS

Summer at DIVA. July and August usually provide down time for many arts organizations as they prepare for the fall. The DIVA Center, however, continues full pace with an active summer of exhibits, classes, and media art events.
A new exhibition of art work begins on Friday, July 7th, when the First Friday Art Walk finds the Center's galleries filled with the works of Amy Beller and Jane MacQueen, Peggy Spiess, Keith Legg, Valley Calligraphy Guild, PAWsitive Strokes by the Lane Arts Council/Greenhill Humane Society. Read More about July-August Artists.
Summer classes are available for those wanting to explore their creative side. Check out the full schedule of classes online, or download the Center's Class Brochure.
The Center's Media Arts program has a summer of events beginning with this week's visit by Emily Hay and Marcos Fernandes who are on a West Coast tour in support of their new collaborative CD offering, "WE ARE" now released on Public Eyesore.
In July, DIVA collaborates with the City of Eugene's month-long "In Motion" program focused on alternative transportation options. On July 15-16 DIVA will screen a weekend of bike themed films in the Center's Bike Fest '06. This festival will attract bike enthusiasts from all over the region as we re-screen the highly successfull Portland "Filmed By Bike Festival" and the documentary "16,000 feet on a Friday".
In August, filmmaker/screenwriter Neil Miller visits DIVA as guest artist to discuss his life's work and his most recent feature film now in distribution, "Raising Flagg". August is also the first month for the DIVA Video Slam. The "slam" provides an opportunity for Oregon filmmakers to share and discuss their recent efforts.

DIVA provides unique service for artists. Over a year ago, the DIVA Center created the Artist Services program with the goal of offering support for artists, particularly those who are DIVA members.
The Artist Services program converted a former meeting room into a showcase for work by artist members. Exhibits for the Member's Gallery are selected by those who attend the Artist Salon meetings on the 4th Sunday of every month.
The Artist Salon is an excellent opportunity for area artist to network. In addition, the Salon schedules workshops on topics of professional development and interest. Past topics have have included developing artist statements, approaching galleries, and digitizing images.
The Artist Services committee plans to create a resource library that will have a media contact list, exhibit opportunities, and other information sharing. The committee is currently planning an All Members' Show for August and September. This Center wide exhibit will replace the Salon de Refuses which has been held at DIVA the past two years.
Judy Alison is the Artist Services committee chair. Other members include Rebecca Guy, Anna Hults, and Scott Huette.

Mixed Media Collage Class. Instructor Susan Lehman suggests that students interested in her class take a look at the styles of collage the class will be working on at the 8th International Collage Exhibit & Exchange web site. The DIVA Mixed Media Collage Class is on Thursday, June 29 and runs from 1-5pm $40+$5 materials.

The Archaeology Channel screens film about India. India has a rich, complex and very ancient cultural tapestry that deserves better understanding and appreciation around the world. The Archaeology Channel is exhibiting an important part if India's cultural past in Ur: A Video Essay on Tamil - Part 1. This is the latest video feature on the Eugene based nonprofit streaming-media Web site.
In south India is a culture with a continuous literary tradition more than 2000 years old.  With 80 million speakers, Tamil is one of few languages besides Greek that is both classical and modern.  This video essay outlines in images and music the development of the rich Tamil culture and writing systems.  The origins of its earliest written script, found on cave walls, is a mystery.  Some say it descends from the still undeciphered Indus script, used 4000 years ago in modern Pakistan and northwestern India, and that the Indus people spoke Dravidian, ancestral to Tamil. DIVA and the Archaeology Channel have worked together to show the best of the Archaeology Film Festival.

WEB SITE ART EXPLORATIONS

Hatsheput: From Queen to Pharaoh. Rather than mounting an online exhibition to accompany Hatsheput: From Queen to Pharaoh, the Metropolitan Museum has chosen instead to provide a series of auxiliary features on its Web site. For example, there is an information page, which explains that Hatshepsut, who ruled Egypt for 20 years (ca. 1473–1458 B.C.), was the first important female ruler known to history. A special audio feature narrated by actor Sam Waterston can be listened to as a podcast, downloadable MP3 file, or 12-minute streaming audio. There is also a 19-image slide show that includes sculpted portraits of Hatshepsut, jewelry, vases, as well as chairs and other household items. Finally, there are links with ordering information for the exhibition catalog and other exhibition-related items from the Museum store. Visit Web Site.

Moving Pictures: The Drive-By Photography of Dewitt Jones. Dewitt Jones is a photographer and philosopher living on the island of Molokai. To be published by Liverpool University Press and co-edited by Anahid Kassabian (Liverpool University) and Ian Gardiner (Goldsmiths College), the journal will be truly interdisciplinary, inviting contributions across a range of critical methodologies, to include musicology and music analysis, film studies, popular music studies, cultural theory, aesthetics, semiotics, sociology, marketing, sound studies, and music psychology.
